How to Choose the Right Therapist for You

The greatest indicator of positive outcomes of a person’s therapy journey is the relationship between the therapist and the client. Therapy should feel like a relaxed conversation between two people who appreciate each other’s company. This is not to say that the conversations are always light hearted, although sometimes they are, but it should never feel scary or unsafe. If you feel uncomfortable with your therapist then that person is not the “fit” for you. Fit may mean more than just comfortability too. Fit could be someone who you feel “gets you”, shares traits with you so they feel familiar, has no traits like you because you don’t want to be reminded of yourself or a family member, or may even be someone who represents the familial relationship you always wanted. The good news is that you get to decide fit. There is a therapist on every corner so you have the luxury of shopping around. To hear more about “fit” in therapy, please see the video on the the Conscious Living Counseling Center website from the owner, Christine. Finally, once you think you have “fit” you want to be sure the person is qualified to deliver what you are looking for with therapy. Several therapists have specialties such as anger management or trauma. Read their advertising so you know they are the right person for you. So, to recap- look for comfortability, safety, and skill level and you will be on your way to wellness.
