How Do I Stop Panic Attacks?

If you are having panic attacks, and have determined with the guidance of a medical professional that there is no medical cause for them, then counseling can help. The primary type of therapy for panic attacks is cognitive behavioral therapy. This type of therapy explores the thinking patterns that sustain and trigger panic attacks. For example, if you had a panic attack on a bridge and thought you would crash the car you programmed your brain to hold the belief that when driving on bridges you will have panic attacks and crash your car. Then, every time you drive on the bridge you have that same thought and trigger your panic symptoms. Cognitive behavioral therapy will help rewire your thinking, by exploring the accuracy of your thoughts, and looking at your fears more realistically.
Other treatments for panic disorders include exposure therapy and medication. Exposure therapy exposes a client to stimuli close to the issue that causes panic while teaching relaxation skills in a safe environment. Eventually through a series of exposure activities the client becomes able to experience the initially triggering event without panic. Medication can be used to temporarily reduce symptoms of panic however it is not a cure or a long-term solution. Medication is most effective when used in conjunction with counseling.
